I had a quick conversation with a friend yesterday talking about how great our City Church volunteers are. I began to realize that those who work/serve with you are usually the best gauge on how effective your leadership is. The people/group/tribe you're leading should understand their role and it's importance to the overall mission and purpose or the church/organization. A leader worth following shares his/her vision and heart with the team, so that if the leader is gone for whatever reason, the team is able to function effectively and with excellence in his/her absence.
Don't get me wrong...having the person people go to for direction and guidance is important, but if you're a leader who feels you HAVE TO be a part of everything ALL the time...that's not healthy for your PLD (personal leadership development) and for those whose leadership needs maturing. Here's my advice. Take a vacation. Delegate responsibilities to key leaders on your team. Let them run the show sort of speak. You will be surprised how great they do. All they needed was an opportunity to shine.
When you look at scripture... Jesus is the leader of the 12 disciples. And when he leaves, those guys take on a primary leadership role...to carry out the things they were taught by Jesus (their leader) and begin teaching/discipline/leading others. This is the cycle of leadership. Follow a leader worth following. Learn. Grow. then become a leader worth following. Help others learn. Help others grow. Then they repeat the process.
Jesus is a leader worth following and I believe he also calls us to also be a leader worth following.
